Being in the asylum procedure

Are you in the asylum procedure or about to apply for asylum in the Netherlands? Read below how you get health care, where to go when you are sick, and who can help you.

Important: HealthEmove is made by the Amsterdam health & technology institute (ahti). We are not a medical or legal organisation. This information was checked on 25 September 2026, but rules can change. Always check with GZA, COA or your lawyer what applies to you.

In an emergency, call 112.

For medical questions, call the GZA Practice Line: 088 112 2 112. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

List of organisations for your health(care):

GZA
The GZA is responsible for your healthcare during the asylum procedure. There is an GZA health centre at or near almost every COA location.

RMA healthcare
The RMA pa
ys for your health care through the RMA, the health care scheme for asylum seekers. It works like health insurance.

COA
The COA arranges your reception and your health care. COA pays for an interpreter when you see a doctor.

GGD
The GGD is the public health service of the municipalities. The GGD does the TB check, vaccinations, health care for children and sexual health care.

Your municipality (Gemeente)
Your municipality is responsible for youth care for children and some emergency shelters. After a positive decision, the municipality helps you arrange health insurance.

The most important things to remember:

  • Save the GZA Practice Line in your phone: 088 112 2 112.
  • Health care covered by the RMA is free. You do not pay anything yourself.
  • Tell GZA if you are ill, pregnant, have a disability, use medication or feel mentally unwell.
  • You have the right to a professional interpreter at the doctor. You do not need a family member or child to translate.
  • Your doctor must keep your medical information private.
  • You have the right to a copy of your medical file. Keep all medical letters, prescriptions and vaccination records. You can scan and securely store them in the HealtheMove app.
  • Check your post at your reception location regularly. Hospital appointments are often sent by letter.
  • Do not go to a private clinic without asking GZA first. The RMA only pays for care providers that have a contract with the RMA.
